The Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of over 100 World War I-era wooden steamships, collectively known as the "Ghost Fleet." The sanctuary's historical significance extends to connections with the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. It is also a testament to a rich cultural tapestry, encompassing commercial fishing, military history, and the traditions of the Piscataway Indian Nation, the Piscataway Conoy Tribe of Maryland, and the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia. Recognized for its historical value, it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is also an integral part of the Southern Maryland National Heritage Area.
