Approximately 3,115 acres of this peninsula are conserved under the Virginia Natural Area Preserve System.
IIn 2019, a 70-acre easement along Potomac Creek was donated to Crow's Nest. This easement is recognized for hosting one of the largest great blue heron nesting sites in the Chesapeake region. During a tour, visitors can observe a variety of birds; bald eagles and ospreys are often seen catching fish and returning to their perches around the perimeter of Crow's Nest.
